Competency-Based Education
A curriculum built around what learners can do
LA Mombasa follows Kenya’s Competency-Based Education (CBE), the national curriculum developed by the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development (KICD).
Rather than focusing only on what learners can remember for an exam, CBE builds the knowledge, skills, values and attitudes they need to apply what they learn in real life – through projects, practical work, discussion and enquiry.
Learners move through four levels – Pre-Primary, Primary, Junior School and Senior School – from kindergarten all the way to Grade 12, all on one campus in Nyali.

Assessment
How progress is measured
- Every term
Continuous school-based assessment – classwork, projects, practical tasks and observation – with regular reports to parents.
- End of Grade 6
KPSEA, the Kenya Primary School Education Assessment, set by the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC).
- End of Grade 9
KJSEA, the Kenya Junior School Education Assessment, which together with school-based results guides the choice of Senior School pathway.
- End of Grade 12
The national Senior School assessment by KNEC, leading on to university, college and careers.
